Period

" Period means an end of a sentence but it also indicates the start of a new sentence."

4/27  it has been more than 4 weeks since I left my home town and stayed in the dorm of KMLA. I'm not saying that I don't like the dorm life but, being used to the convenient life at home this 4 week of dorm life  has been somewhat tiring.

Anyway I'm back home with my cozy room and my comfortable bed which are all I need at this moment.

Now with the midterm over everybody is feeling somewhat relaxed. It hasn't been the very perfect start but past is past and mourning about it wouldn't change anything.

So by using this weekend as a turning point I would relax and do everything I missed during the 4 weeks time. And once again pull myself together and start a new sentence, a new period.

Academic Movie Review ; The Age of Stupid

"With greater light comes greater shadow." This quote seems to embrace the whole situation happening in today's society ; as the development of technology have contributed much to the convenience of our everyday life it is also pushing our civilization forward, hurtling us towards to what seems to be the elimination of the human race. In this academic film review of 'The Age of Stupid.' I would elaborate on two major points; overall opinion about the context of the film, and the analysis on whether the approach of this film was effective or not.

<Overall opinion about the context of the film>

"Stupidity is everywhere you go" I recall hearing this phrase from one of the English teacher who happens to teach us and who is not Mr. Tame :) And as recited in the title of this film, stupidity really seems to be the common factor around the globe. Stupidity is further pronounced in the following example from the film, about the conflicts between the Piers Guy and the protestants of Wind Energy.

Piers Guy, is a wind-farm developer whose vision is to bring sustainable energy to the English villages. However his project on building a wind farm in Central England faces severe protests from the local neighbors, delaying the project for more than 18 months. If the projects have been progressed as planned 10% of the Energy used in England would have been non-pollution. In Piers desperate attempts to convince the locals, he tries to explain the seriousness of the present situation and that wind farm could serve as one of the many solution to solve this problem. But, his efforts are in vain even after his 6 minute speech appealing about the benefits of wind farm the wind farm policy are outnumbered by at least 10 to 1.

The protestant act mentioned in this film is called "stop the spin" but, through further research I was able to find many more protestant group against the wind energy act. The stupidity were at its peak during the interview with the locals after the decision; rejecting the construction of the wind farm. In the interview the old lady says that "Of course I care about the global warming!(3:43)" however I found this saying very contradictionary with her action which is mere based on the concept of NIMBY.

(3: 43)

<Analysis on whether the approach of this film was effective>

"寸鐵殺人" this means that a very small piece of metal could accomplice a murder, to further elaborate; the right one word could achieve more than hundred unnecessary words. Therefore choosing the effective approach to deliver its message is crucial to films, especially documentary films. There are diverse opinions about whether this film; The Age of Stupid have fulfilled its purpose of production. I strongly believe that this approach introduced in the film have effectively passed on the message to the lookers.

A Lot of Sticks And Not Much Carrot. Definitely there isn't much carrot in this film, mainly sticks designed to scare us into action. Some may find this film to be a but insufficiently sophisticated or talks about things that are considered common knowledge, there is even a review that quotes " Sometimes scrappy, some might find sci-fipremise annoying" On the other hand in the time where the movie society is basically flooded with movie which has a very smooth plot and flow of the story, this rather ragged raw documentary might be the solution for a better deliver of message. The passion, urgency and the ragged edges give the lookers a feeling of reality and refreshing as well. In addition there is also the factor of Pathos mode of persuasion. The Age of Stupid is basically is a film in which 6 stories which seems to be separated begins to intertwine as the film elaborates leading up to the conclusive question; Why didn't we save ourselves when we had the chance? And these different stories are the example of Pathos persuasion; by dumping the undeniable truth onto us we are convinced through the sympathy and pity we feel for others.

To put it into a nutshell, where there is benefit there is always a price for it. However the stupidity of the human beings are making the shadows of this technical development more darker. Realizing the urgency of this enlarging problem the director Franny Armstrong creates this film with very raw and ragged edges. Where there is still debates on whether this method is effective or not I strongly argue that this method is effective after all! To rephrase, the stupidity of humans are worsening the present situation and I believe that the director Franny Armstrong way of raising the alarm is effective to save us when we still have the chance now. "Never is too late."

My Interest Biology Experiment - 2

<Observation of Osmosis in the onion cell.>

Vocabulary

Osmosis : you could look as it as a movement of solvent molecules due to the difference in molecule pressure between two or more solution mixed.

So, to make it clear if a substance is putted in to a solution which has higher density of solute molecules the solvent molecules move out of it's original substance.

Experiment  NO. - 1

Putting the onion cell in to a salt solution for 5 min.

This picture on the left is the picture taken from a normal onion cell before any experiment has been done to the cell.
(Picture taken my a microscope of X 400)

From this picture we can see that the cell membrane is attached tightly to the cell wall of the onion cell.

Showing us that the cell is at it's normal state.

Moving on, this picture on the right is the picture taken from a cell which have been soaked in a salt solution for 5 mins.

We can see that the cell membrane is starting to get separated from the cell wall. Due to the osmosis effect which drained the water from inside the cell to the outside of the cell.

Experiment NO. -2

This time we dumped the cell in to the salt solution for 10 mins straight and observed it.

The cell membrane was more separated from the cell wall than the previous experiment. And there were even cells which were completely detached from the wall itself.

Experiment NO. -3

Last experiment, we put the cell in to the salt solution for 15 mins.
The results were a more elaborated result of the 10 mins experiment

Some of the cell membrane have shriveled completely that they were no longer visible.

And form these three experiments we were able to conclude that the more time given for osmosis to happen the more dynamic movement happened, until a equilibrium is made between the two solutions.

And also the longer you soak it the longer it took for the cell to recover it's original shape when putted in to pure water.

THE END.

My Interest Biology Experiment - 1

<Testing My Own Blood Type & Observing White Blood Cell>

*vocabulary

-Antigen : basically it is a substance that provokes the production of antibody.
-Antibody : large Y-shaped proteins. They are recruited by the immune system tto identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses.

                                                           (from the help of Wikipedia)

Experiment No.1 Testing My Own Blood Type

The Blue liquid is B type serum also known as anti-A antibody. So this means that if this substance are mixed with blood type of A the antibody inside this liquid would bundle the blood.

As seen the blood is solidified meaning that it has the antigen of A

The Yellow liquid is A type serum also known as anti-B antibody. So reversely this means that if this substance are mixed with blood type of B the antibody inside this liquid would bundle the blood.

However this time my blood did not bundle up! Meaning that I don't have the antigen of inside my blood.

Lastly the colorless liquid is a anti-RH+ antibody. This of course means that this substance would solidify the blood if it is the bloody type of RH+.

This time it solidified. Meaning that my blood comprises the antigen of RH+.

To summarize due to the fact that I have the antigen of A and RH+ but not B. I can conclude that my blood type is RH+ A.

Experiment No.2 Observing White Blood Cell

We dyed our blood with the substance called Giemsa. Where it dyes the nuclear of the white blood cells.

As it is seen on this picture.

Book Review + Summary - New Ideas From Dead Economists

New Ideas From Dead Economists

Humans are the variable of constantly changing Economic maze. Economics is the study of choice. What choices can the consumer, and the producer take in their given situation. Therefore the main job of the economists is to analyze the consequences that each choice can bring and try to simplify it in order to help other citizens to understand the exact outcome. However to analyze the exact outcome all economists have to take the factor called 'human' into consideration. And this is the reason why so many economists have been so hampered and attacked by so many people, even from fellow economists. However these accusations seems a bit odd to the economists who have tried their best to analyze 'human' factor, and think of themselves as a mere messengers not the cause of bad news.
Of course not every Economists remain only to be the messenger, the great economists have setup their own models and have introduce them to the society, showing more clearly which path to take. However every models have their differences from their different point of view at looking at the 'human' factor. And this maze will continue to change until at last we find the perfect way to analyze the human being.

<Alfred Marshall and the Marginalist Mind>

In the field of Economics there are mainly two fields; Micro and Macro. And it is no exaggeration to say the Marshall was the one who created the fundamental base of Micro-economics.

Marshall was not as out of box thinkers as did John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx. Marshall was like a turtle gradually and slowly reaching to his conclusions. And this is shown clearly in his approach to his studies. Whereas the Classical economists followed the way of Newton, Marshall turned to the way of evolution by Darwin. During this approach of his studies he founds an concept of marginalism, and this discovery paves a way for the development of the microeconomics today.

So to start from the roots how did Marshall happened to stumble across the concept of marginalism? Well it was no accident. First Marshall defined a term called ' ceteris paribus' meaning, "other things being equal" Through this he was able to exclude many variable factors out of this way and begin to focus on two types of factors; demand and supply.

Another thing that is unique about Marshall is that unlike the previous economists he approached the analyze of economics from the demand part, not the supply. In this he enunciated the law of demand. The law of demand is cause by the so called 'marginalist Consumer" As the consumer continues to buy the same object the pleasure caused by each buy reduces until the marginal price meets the marginal benefit deciding the amount of the objet to produce. To put this theory into a nutshell we could draw a graph with demand curve and supply curve, and marking the crossing point as the price and the quantity for the certain object.

Another factor that is mentions is about the elasticity of each society. Elasticity is measured by the amount of the demand

change due to the change price level. If the elasticity is lower than 1 that group is considered inelastic, on the other hand if the elasticity is over 1 it is classified as a elastic group. So what factors affect the elasticity? First there is the number of the substitutes available. If there is a abundant amount of substitutes around the consumer the elasticity would be high and the vice versa. Second there is the time needed for the consumer to find the substitutes. The more time given the more elastic the group will become. Thirdly, Marshall argued that products unimportant to household budget would be inelastic such as the price of the toothpick, etc..

Marshall's gradual approach and his patience will be continuously tried by the future generations of economists. He did not wait for the answers he searched for them, he did not wait for their adoption he campaigned for them. But he never embraced an idea even if it was his, without careful consideration. And it was this careful consideration which enabled the combination of classical and marginalist economics. I highly respect him for this and would like to follow his path.

<Keynes & Monetarist>

As we move up to the 20th centaury the economists divide into three different groups. Neo-classical, Keynes, and Monetarists. At which in 1929 the Great Depression dooms over the whole World these three groups each brings up with a different solution to solve this depression.

The Classical Economists was against the idea of the economy losing its independence due to the interference of the Government. For they believed that the economy will reach an equilibrium by itself in the long run by the Invisible Hand. However due to this Great Depression it was proven that their policy wasn’t reliable; for longer this depression continued the worse it got.

The Monetarists believed that the monetary policy was the key to overcome the depression which showed no sign of recovering. To understand this Monetery Policy fully we have to start with a simple equation
MV=PQ
Here the M stands for the money supply and V as the velocity of the money flow. P for the Price level and Q meaning the real GDP . The monetarists believed that the V and Q remains somewhat constant meaning that they were not fixed as the Classical believed. So if the FRB increases the money supply by selling bonds etc, both price level and the real GDP will increase. And it was this increase in the GDP which the monetarists took interest, thinking that this was the key to spike up the rumbling economy.

Finally there is the perspective of the Keynes. While the monetarists and classicalists only took the supply as a variable factor Keynes took the demand as the variable factor. In the graph of Aggregate Supply and Demand Keynes believed that the Government has to increase the amount of their purchase for them to shift the demand curve to the right resulting in the increase of GDP and the decline in the unemployment rate.

In the end it was the Keynes' way that scooped the US economy out of the depression. By the increase of the demand curve due to the World War 2 and the sudden need of military supply.

Keynes and the Monetarists' both left a significant marks to the modern Macro economics but it the competition between these two groups that really motivated this great development. As the result the Government nowadays have 4 pedals to control the economy of the country mixing both Fiscal and Monetary Policy.
There is a saying "Dark clouds have silver linings." Harsh may situation such as the Great Depression may be it is needed for the greater development in the fields of economics. So instead of just moaning over the harsh situation we should look at it from the bright side and think of it as a chance to take one more big steps towards the optimal solution.
