To the DMZ......

Today I had a very unique and special experience. I was actually able to go into the 'citizen restricted area' in the DMZ. The reason I was able to go into this zone was because from this year I am participating a NGO group's project which is to study the environmental society  in the DMZ.

So what is DMZ and what is so special about it?

The Korean Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between  North and South Korea which runs along the 38th parallel north. the DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle. With the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It was created as part of the Korean Armistice Agreement between North Korea, the People's Republic of China, and the United Nations Command forces in 1953.

  To
rephrase this DMZ(Korean Demilitarized Zone) is a kind of a belt that penetrates the Korean Peninsula from West to East roughly around the 38th parallel on the angel. This zone acts as a buffer between the North and the South  giving the each side time to notice and prepare for one side tries to start a war.  The basic structure of this zone is shown by this picture.

So now we know about what this DMZ is what is the fuss with this? The answer for this question
requires a bit of historical knowledge about the Korean War. The Korean War started in 1950 and was ended in 1953. The part where we have to focus on is the year this war ended ; 1953. So this DMZ was established in 1953 and for 60 full years any human activities was restricted leaving this strip of land untouched of any human company. In this 60 years this zone was able to recover their original state while the other parts of the world was being destroyed by us humans. For this reservation this zone is in a very subtle position in both political and environmental state. This also serves as  a reason why we are doing a research project here.

Due to the fact that today was the first trip to this Zone we didn't start right onto the research but had a look around this DMZ. Tasting the
atmosphere of the surrounding environment. During this tour I was astonished to see so many creature living in this environment and was able to really feel for myself how much environment destruction have progressed in our society.

The teachers(?) at there told us that we only brimmed the surface of the whole yet. I'm so excited and looking forward to the next investigation already!  :)

2nd TOEFL ESSAY

Topic : The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? Use examples and details in your answer.

131052 노형석(Roh Hyung-Seok)

Immortality. This simple concept has grasped the whole attention of the human race for a long time and is still motivating us to move forward. As a matter of fact this longing for a longer life is actually paying off. The average life expectancy today has considerably risen than the past. However the human race in the 20th century have faced some kind of barrier which have been unable to overcome ; blocking them to reach higher to the level where the average age of death would be three digit numbers. However now in the 21th century we have finally found the key which would humble these barriers ; iPS Cells and Nano technology.

Ninety percent of all the disease occuring around the globe is due to the malfunctioning of particular genes in stem cells. For it is the stem cells that replicate the particular cells suited for a particular function. Therefore the stem cells have been the target for many biologists since its discovery. Originally there has only been two types of stem cells ; embryonic stem cell and adult stem cell. However a new kind of stem cell called the iPS cell has been discovered recently by Shinya Yamanaka, a scientist. To briefly introduce the basic concept of this iPSC(induced Pluripotent Stem Cell), it is  a stem cell with select features from both embryonic stem cell and adult stem cell. While the embryonic stem cell brought about human right issues and adult stem cell research show too slow progress, the iPSC is a stem cell which the transcription are reversed. In this way this iPCS has the possibility to become any organ while keeping the human right issue off the table. By this, diseases serious such as Leukemia and AIDS become theoretically curable.

Nanotechnology is also a rising subject of study these days. Even though through the invention of iPSC we have found the way to cure diseases so called "incurable diseases". The progress of implanting the iPCS in exchange for the malfunctioning stem cell is still a challenge with sheer chance of success with the old technologies. This is where the nanotechnology comes in. Able to control robots in a nanometer scale the precision in which the robots could substitute the stem cell would be much more accurate than before thus saving precious time and resources. Furthermore by injecting nano-sized robots into the blood vessel of the human body us humans could get a daily feedback about your health status. Enabling you to take early actions to whether to cure or prevent certain diseases

In conclusion, the presence of human life is the most important factor valued in the 21th century. For without life there are no reason whatsoever to chase after other different changes for you will not be there to enjoy it. So through this two technology ; iPSC and Nanotechnology it has allowed us to take one step towards immortality. And this is the change I believe would have the most important impact to the human society in the 21th century.

Reflection on the in-class response to Body Ritual Among the Nacirema _ by Horace Miner

"The magical beliefs and practices of the Nacirema present such unusual aspects that it seems desirable to describe them as an example of the extremes to which human behavior can go."

In the 3 seconds I read this very sentence every prejudice, stereotype for this piece of writing was decided. The first time I read this short essay I had no whatsoever clue that this essay would be devoted in criticizing the American Society, but randomly guessed that it would describe some sadistic tribe somewhere in Africa. Looking back I'm beginning to doubt whether the situation would have been any better even after we were given the chance to read the essay again and again. So mainly in this essay I would cover two factors ; my first reaction when I realized the true meaning of "Nacirema" and how this experience affected how I view or interact with different cultures.

I and the rest of my class was given this essay on "Nacirema" very abruptly, without any heads up. So the overall feeling when we started reading was a complex mixture of being perplexed and puzzled. This feeling of perplexity got more pronounced with each sentence we read. How it talks about a tribe called Nacirema and describing in detail each consisting members such as "shrine box", "holy-mouth-man", "medicine men", "listener", and "latipso" was kind of too much to comprehend all at once. With the feeling of puzzled at its peak I started to write down the in-class essay barely managing to read the script in time. So the class ended like that without any further mentioning of the topic from Mr. Menard. Then it wasn't until the next class that everyone (well everyone except Stark) was dumbfounded after realizing the true meaning in the script. It just all made sense "characterized by a highly developed market economy" meaning the developed market system of USA, "shrine box" symbolizing the medicine cabinet at the toilet, "holy-mouth-man" the dentist, "medicine men" the pharmacist, "listener" the psychiatrist, and "latipso" meaning the hospital. It was just amazing that someone was able to come up with the simple but brilliant idea of relocation the alphabets backwards. In addition to this the fact that this script was written in 1956 was just mind blowing but, the fact that this script was written considerably long time ago also points out how long and serious this "Lookism" is in the US society have been going on. So I was able to realize that this is a serious problem and we better fix it before it gets out of hands.

As I mentioned previously while I was reading this script even though the script said that Nacirema was a North American group, I completely forgot about this and assumed that this tribe would be one of the uncivilized tribes living in the rainforests somewhere in South America. Like this I was able to notice myself that in my unconsciousness I was having this stereotype that uncivilized group would be located at places like Africa, South America while the civilized society would be located in Europe, North America and East Asia. This realization of my own stereotype was kind of a shock to me for I thought of myself as a person with delicate objective perspective. Anyway this was certainly a kind of a motivation for me and the way how I viewed other cultures have changed considerable amount since then. I'm not saying that there aren't good or bad cultures I'm not saying that, of course there are cultures that are morally wrong. Such as the cultures of the Muslims that discriminates women. Which could be seen as outraging the very core of Human Rights ; Freedom. The changes I have faced is not the matter of right and wrong of each culture but about the fact that cultures from more developed countries doesn't necessary mean that the culture is more developed. So I've decided when interacting with foreigners with different cultural background I wouldn't decipher his or her value based on the country the person is from but measure his or her value purely on the culture itself.

To rap it up, this script about "Nacirema" was a cultural shock to me. In both informative and perspective way. Firstly it pointed out the serious problem of "Lookism" happening in the US. Secondly it showed my own wrong stereotype motivating me to look at different cultures in a completely new perspective. Furthermore during the time while reading and analyzing this script I thought about the effective ways of writing. In this case by relocating the alphabets backwards and pretending to be completely different concept highly made this script effective for this method was fresh and grasped every reader's full attention. Overall, reading and writing this script's reflection was unique and meaningful experience which I won't be forgetting any time soon.

Thursday....

Seriously looking forward to weekends.......

Need for Refreshment!

Certainly it is such a relief that the midterm is over and I'm very happy about it. But the after shock of the exam is finally catching up with me.

First of all the lack of sleep is ruining my whole day. For a man to carry on his normal life he needs to follow the bio-rhythm. But this lack of sleep is completely tearing apart this bio-rhythm which I have become used to.

Secondly , about the scores of the midterm. Many says that scores in KMLA would be completely different than what we used to get in out middle school. But actually facing these shocking scores it was kind of a blow to my head. Making me anxious and stressed out about the overall GPA.

SO! It seems I certainly need a refreshment and refreshment is actually of the way!

THE VISION TRIP

At May 8th all the 18th waves are hopping onto a plane to both Europe or USA for the 10 night 11 days journey. The fundamental purpose of this trip is to let us see the wide world outside from Korea and help us to set a vision for out future career. But, it basically is having a fun time with our peers :)

It's the second time I'm visiting the USA since the time I visited it 10 years ago. !0 years is a long time and variety of things have changed around the world in the past 10 years. So it would be kind of a special moment for me able to compare the two separate moments differed by 10 years of time.

In this trip we would be visiting various colleges such as IVY Leagues. And though it might give some pressure about our future career I believe and hope that this trip would serve me the right refreshment for me to wake up from this dull state and start over again.
